Paradox Of The Cross: Love That Conquered All

Did you trace the steps of Christ this holy week?

Have you journeyed along the path He bore?

Contemplated His burden from Gethsemane to Calvary?

A garden located outside the city walls. Gethsemane, a grove of olive trees. Quiet and tranquil. The place where Christ prayed on this gruesome night. In the distance. Soldiers. Swords. A scheme emerging. Of treachery. Treason. And seizure. Here Christ requested the disciples stay with Him. Pray. But they fell asleep.

In the darkest hour. Of this shadowy and bleak night. The last supper now passed. The betrayal plot about to transpire. Christ wrestled in prayer. Final moments spent with His Father. His life drawing ever closer to the cross. His suffering in spirit had begun.

The divided heart. Of Judas filled with darkness. Betrayal for thirty pieces of silver. Captured. Arrested. Profound awfulness. Dragged to trial. Like a lamb to the slaughter. Stripped. Condemned. Whipped. Despised. Rejected. Mocked.

What was the paradox of the cross?

Christ walked alone. Broken. Struggling. Mocked. Scarred. Pierced. What horror. That displayed such love. Streaming from His life. As He was broken and bruised. Battered and torn. Bound. Lashed and lacerated. Blood ran red. Flowing with love. So pure. Divine. Through unimaginable, indescribable pain. Ghastly and brutal. Profane. Severe.

We can never fathom the agony in Gethsemane, but at least we need not misunderstand it. It is the agony of God and Man in one, face to face with sin. We know nothing about Gethsemane in personal experience. Gethsemane and Calvary stand for something unique; they are the gateway into Life for us.

Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest

The sacrifice of love. Redemption. The path to Divinity meeting wickedness. Reconciliation. Absolute and unreserved. A bridge to rescue the fall of man. Intentional. Restoration. The gap a wooden cross that brought Christ to death. Love overcoming hate. The face of boundless grace. Unfathomable suffering. To heal sorrow. And broken-ness. Unmerited forgiveness. To cleanse sin. Divine peace. To soothe vile hearts. Incomprehensible long-suffering. At the cross where kindness defies callousness. Salvation. Truly this was inconceivable anguish. Bringing deliverance.

Hung from a cross. Forgiveness gushed. For Christ forgave those who crucified Him. There was no prestige. No power. No fame. Only freedom. Inauguration of divine love. The women who remained at the foot of the Cross. Faithful to the end. The sacrificial Lamb of God.

Walk in the shadow of The Cross with key moments from Holy Week:

  • Thursday – Gethsemane.
  • Friday – The Crucifixion.
  • Saturday – The Burial.
  • Sunday – The Resurrection.

Reflect. Pray for revelation. Where Christ struggled in Gethsemane. Contemplate the love portrayed. Beyond our understanding. Persecution spiralling every curse away. Calvary a display of love we could never earn. So undeserved. Limitless. Unwavering. But undeniably available to all.

At the empty tomb (now depicted by the hollow Easter egg) we too can encounter the riches of His measureless grace. The One who holds all secrets. Now and for all time. To come face to face with the only Potentate, the King of kings [1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 17:14; 19:16]. Once mocked and crowned with thorns. The agony He endured. As He became the son of man. Now Arisen. Alive. The Living One! Who was dead. But is alive forever and ever. And holds the keys of death and hell. [Revelation 1:18] The veil has been torn. So that we could become Sons and Daughters of God. Paving a direct approach to the Throne. The Holy of Holies. All Hail The King.
