Life-changing ‘If Onlys’ & ‘What Ifs’ To God’s Timetable

Have you realised that God works according to His own timetable?

Once you can accept this, you will be able to lighten up and smile knowing that God has you right where He needs you to be and is able to get you where He wants you to go. Now this does not mean life will be a breeze, what it simply means is that God knows everything and while we don’t know what lies ahead. He does and is in control. Maybe you have lots of unanswered or hanging questions. Even though you might not get answers or what you want, God is at work. Because He is bigger than what you can comprehend or imagine.

Remember all the things you had to go through to get to where you are now?

Or maybe you are still going through adverse and afflicting times. If God had told you in advance – how would you have reacted? I know that I would have probably thrown my arms up in the air and exclaimed WHY! Most times God won’t reveal all the details to you because He knows you won’t be able to handle it right now. Yet, during all these tests, He has changed my heart and aligned it more and more to His. God knows that it takes time and patience and sometimes that’s the reason why He is silent.

Consider Joseph. From the pit to the palace we follow his life. From a dreamer to the interpreter of dreams. It was in prison that Joseph discovered this fact, that when God gives you a vision and you commit yourself to this plan; there is no ‘opt out’ clause. Too often we are guilty of living in yesterday and repeatedly criticise ourselves – ‘if only I had done this… I would have achieved this…’ Or projecting into the future and speculating about tomorrow thinking – ‘what if I did this… and that happened…’

What can we learn from Joseph’s life?

He was tested through adversity; allurement and advancement. Sound familiar? These are most of the trials we will encounter in our own lives. Through all of this he learned how to submit to God. He remained loyal even when he was wrongly accused and thrown into prison. Reminding us of these key aspects…

  • Don’t give up on your dreams…
  • Never lose your focus when distractions or temptations wander into your path…
  • Remember God when your dreams begin to come true…

All tests are hard, the parts that catch us unawares or push us away from God. However, God is saying to us that we need to take each step with Him. As He gives us the strength to cope and proceed with what we need to do just one day at a time. Trust Him with your dreams and plans. Despite obstacles, hard times or distractions – time will reveal all. Through testing times and God’s divine revelation for each step. If your plans match up with His heart, then know He can work out all things according to His timetable not yours.

My father was just lamenting yesterday evening about not spending more time with us when we were children. I had told him that we can’t do anything about the “what ifs” of the past, only love and live in the present. Excellent points!

Trusting God means trusting His timing, too!

Great post! Trusting when we don’t understand is hard. But the greatest outcome and reward is when we learn to trust God no matter what. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

This is good, practical advice, Ava. We don’t always get to know the reasons, but the waiting and trusting is something we can do. Joseph is a wonderful example of how to do this. Thanks.
