How To Disable Your Irritable And Unhappy Addiction This Autumn

Have you run out of inspiration in the changing seasons?

Lately, it feels like life has overtaken me a bit. Sometimes with so many things to think about, we often are distracted. The one thing we cannot miss is the changing of the seasons. Where nature subtly reminds us, that it’s October and the days are certainly drawing in.

Thoughts to prevent you from feeling discontent in this season…

  • Addiction is our response to our fleshly cravings, not what our spirit needs. Such as becoming a workaholic or always in pursuit of entertainment or seeking people and objects to fill our needs. Statistics have revealed the internet as a prominent addiction, that has taken over our society.
  • In the times you struggle, there is a hole within your soul that only God can fill. Turning to popularity, pleasure, power or possessions will not fill this blank.
  • In the same way we get hungry and thirsty, if we become wise, we can listen to the cravings of our soul and follow God’s voice instead.
  • Here’s the answer, only total surrender and dependency on God can satisfy our addictions. Like the woman at the well, she longed for something that would take away her pursuit of pleasure, unhappiness and discontent. When she left the well, she had the water of life, that will quench any thirst (John 4:13-15).
  • Learn to recognise how you feel. Then rather than heed your compulsive or obsessive feelings – reach for God like the deer pants for water, let your soul long for God (Psalms 42:1).

There is a sharpness and coolness that accompanies this time of year. Some days the rain falls softly or gushingly. Soaking the fallen leaves or turning our gaze to the refreshing change of each season, where blessings are hidden everywhere. Other days are bathed in warm sunshine, accentuating the glowing colours of nature dying all around us. Reminding us that nothing holds permanence.

  • Time for change, where our sights and senses are tugged to another place.
  • Wrap up and take long walks in the woods.
  • Let the silence capture you, to blend your daydreams with reality.
  • Discover the deep pause, where you can trail through crunchy leaves or tread on soggy leaf carpeted paths.
  • Allow your soul to be calmed by the chilling breeze, that leads us to a place where we are prodded to slow down.
  • Simply breathe in and taste the crisp air.
  • Captured by the charm of painted leaves and exquisite tints of autumn sunsets.

As the daylight slowly fades, The soothing whispers of dusk beckon us, To step into the warm indoors and curl up on the sofa. Away from the melting light, As we watch the stunning colours fade to grey. The sound of the wind rising, Wildly blowing through the trees surrounds us. Memories of warm summer evenings are replaced, With a pale dreaming calm. October has tiptoed in – sweet and mellow. Radiating her praise for nature, Once green from spring and summer, Now heading towards the glory of the end. Reluctantly nature waveringly falls. Sparkling sunlight slants through the wooded trees, Reminding us that the year is fading. The stealing of time as everything swiftly dies.

Here are some suggested ideas that you could add to your calendar this month…

  • Create heart-warming recipes with fresh autumnal ingredients.
  • Take care of your health, as October is Breast Cancer awareness month.
  • If you are struggling with an addiction, Stoptober is for people wanting to make a lifestyle change and stop smoking.
  • Get inspired by visiting an autumn fair. Then hunt for autumn leaves, acorns and all nature’s produce to create  pretty DIY craft ideas.
  • Start a gratitude journal and find thoughts to reflect on and remind you of all the reasons you shouldn’t tolerate discontent.

A gratitude journal sounds like a lovely idea!! In the past, our family has created a gratitude pumpkin, where we all write things we’re grateful for in a Sharpie on a pumpkin. Maybe this year we will do both!

I’ve always loved the idea of a journal of gratitude and thanksgiving. Because we can look back during hard seasons and remember what great things the Lord has done and how much we really have to be grateful for…the things that really matter most in this life.

Irritable and unhappy as an addiction? Makes sense. They would begin as habits, a cycle. We need to break the cycle. Great ideas here. Great post! God bless!
