How are you doing as you move towards developing a better version of yourself?

May is here and we are marching into this year and decade. Most of our daily lives have been disrupted by a global pandemic that has gripped the world with fear. It may be you began 2020 with a new year’s resolution or a commitment to walk into a new phase of you life aiming to be happy, positive and blossom. But, much of that has been stalled by the new choices we have been forced to make. Where currently a quarter of the world is confronted with some form of lockdown. So where in this catastrophe do you choose to be cheerful and radiant?

This can present possibilities for us to gather novel tips and keep learning. Pace ourselves as we rise and fall, but always stride forward. Though the future may seem uncertain, here are some suggestions to lunge into each week with these helpful hints.

1| Happiness is your choice

Wake up each morning and deliberately choose to feel happy. Because this is something you can decide to do each day. As you progress through the day, when anyone asks, how you are. Tell them you are absolutely great. Reinforcing your choice to be happy in spite of how things may look.

2| Make the most of today

Especially the beginning of each week. Most people still struggle with Mondays. Try to make the best of any situation as you begin your week by looking forward to what the start of a new week can bring. Instead of anticipating the worst.

3| Give unapologetically

Something about giving boosts our mood and wellbeing. It’s the little things like offering to help a neighbour or friend with a difficult chore or giving to a foodbank. Volunteering for the local charity shop or buying a homeless person a coffee. Giving a friend a lift home. These options may not seem feasible with social distancing, but there are many ways you can send an e-card or home deliveries to someone you care about and cannot visit at this time. Maybe someone said they need something and you can buy that for them. There are numerous ways to give of your time, resources and enthusiasm. It uplifts the giver and the receiver.

4| Be thankful

Actively practice this, particularly when you find yourself falling into the comparision trap of wishing you had more money, or a nicer car. You have enough and that should instil gratitude, rather than envy or resentment. In every day, there are at least three things that are obviously staring at you. Count your blessings before you think otherwise.

5| Reframe your viewpoint

Silence the negative self-talk that you selfishly listen to, by transforming your mind with God’s word (Romans 12:2). You can ignore the negative self-talk and believe what God thinks about you instead. You are beautiful and can bounce into today with eagerness and energy to grasp anything life throws at you.

6| Arrange ‘me time’

Set a time or date to just go for a walk, have a coffee, read in the library, take time shopping. Just you. Schedule time to just have time for you each week. Decide on a weekly basis what you would want to do. Being isolated due to Covid-19 might present us with more time for reflection, self-development and prayer. This improves your self-respect when you take the time to fill up and care for yourself. As part of caring for your family and friends. Making you a priority isn’t selfish, it places value on the importance of not neglecting what your needs are. And can be a time where you spend doing this prayerfully alone with God (Psalm 16:11).

7| Concentrate on the right things

If you set a goal, think about how you want to achieve this. Imagine the plan mentally. Don’t waste time placing your attention on things you don’t want. If you want to succeed at a task, picture that you are already successful with every small step you make. Now is not the time to focus on fear. Because God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

8| Celebrate every win

Achievements you may view as insignificant or minor are all progress as you evolve and advance towards the best and more excellent version of yourself. In your work and endeavours. Learning new skills and hobbies. With your family and those you love. Keeping a daily record assists your memory. You can recall moments you might have allowed to slip away, without any recognition and celebrate the small successes in how well you are doing. God sees your radiance and doesn’t want you to miss all the growth (Psalm 34:5) that matures you in your walk each day.

From these points, journalling is crucial to proficiency and progression on your journey through life. By the end of today, begin recording at least one reason why:

  • You choose to be happy…
  • You choose to be thankful…
  • You celebrate every achievement you make…

By the end of the week, you will have twenty one positive accounts, that can increase momentum as you continue to bloom in each week of this year.

Adopt new decisions to become happy in this period we all are learning to adapt to, knowing no moment is ever a waste of time in this stage of ‘being on hold’.

  • Every seed you are planting right now has the potential to germinate into something exceptional.
  • Everything that feels like it has been snatched away in this lockdown, God has the ability to place something more outstanding into our lives.

Number two jumped out at me. Giving to others has a way of taking my eyes off of my own circumstances and focusing on others. I always come away feeling refreshed and encouraged to to keep going in my own life.

I especially love #1. My joy doesn’t depend on my circumstances and doesn’t have to be influenced by others. I can choose to be happy. Thanks for the reminder.
