Are you going through a tough time?
The news around us may interrupt our lives and wreak havoc in our thoughts. Problems related to COVID-19 or something totally different may be affecting your life. In one way or the other, every one of our daily routines has been impacted in some way by this virus, that has overtaken the world.
So how do we deal with these hard times? And try to handle difficulties that arise as a result?
The answer is simple, we can pray. Prayer is important, as it keeps us on the other end of a direct line with God. And we know He provides for us in every way, so why wouldn’t He now. Especially when we might face unprecedented moments and are unable to place anything into perspective.
Although it might be good to face our fears, sometimes we have to change the narrative. The news headlines have not altered much over the last few months. If you turn from channel to channel, all we see is every impossibility and obstacle related to the coronavirus.
We can relive and ruminate over every eventuality, repeatedly. Or we can choose to pause and open the word of God and pray. To help you change your narrative, for the next few moments I have outlined some promises God whispers to us. Above our fears and woes. And leave you with a prayer we all know well, that might take us way back to Sunday School.
- Explore your deepest thoughts and feelings, to provide you with an opportunity to implement different strategies.
- Record those thoughts by writing a letter or memoir to God. Or simply in your own way as you jot whatever comes to mind first.
- Once you complete this, fold the letter or close your journal. And pass all your concerns and complications to God.
- Settle down in a quiet space with God. Meditate on these promises, then end with prayer and stillness.
9 Crucial Promises To Deflect Dread And Unease
A Powerful Prayer of Protection – The Armour of God
In this well-known letter of Paul’s to the Church of Ephesus (Ephesians 6:10-20), he outlined that our daily battles extend into the powers of darkness and spiritual powers of evil in the heavenly realms. The armour as depicted in this chapter was worn by the Roman soldiers. Each piece was meant to protect every part of their body and vital organs from attack. This applies to our modern world today.
In my morning routine –
As I get ready and dressed. Help me to place the full armour of God on – to enable me to fight against the devil’s evil tricks.
I tighten the belt of truth around my waist. Placing God’s truth deep within my heart and mind. To aid me in my decision making and discerning what is Your truth and what is deceit. The belt of the Roman soldier held his garment up and protected his reproductive organs.
I secure the breastplate around my chest. To make God’s choice for right living (righteousness) and guard my heart for it is the fountain of life. The breastplate of the Roman solider protected his heart and vital organs.
I slip on my boots or shoes. To protect my feet as I walk about with the peace only You can provide – that is unshakeable and a confident defence against evil. Wearing sandals, meant the Roman soldier was prepared and protected to go anywhere.
I pick up the shield of faith. To protect my entire body (thoughts, emotions, desires) and embolden me to place my absolute trust in You, the only true God. Who will deliver me from any evil and combat every lie, that is shot in my direction through the burning arrows of the evil one. The shield of the Roman soldier protected him from arrows and blows from a sword.
I fasten my helmet (as I ride my bike). To protect my head. And remind myself of the cost of God’s grace and Christ’s redemption on the Cross – for my life. That has saved me from every destruction and deception. My mind is shielded when I choose to believe what God says and not what the enemy tries to make me believe. The helmet protected the head of the Roman soldier in battle.
I hold the sword of the Spirit closely (the word of God – my life manual). To pierce the darkness that encroaches around me with doubt, apprehension, deception and propaganda. The Roman soldier held the sword closely for easy combat against attack.
I pray in the Spirit at all times with all kinds of prayers, asking for everything I need, without giving up. For God’s will and breakthrough to come.
We may well be in a valley right now, where we feel like we are down more than we are up, but God’s support and guidance is available at a moment’s plea. As an alternative to choosing the defeatist mind-set, we can improve our ability to navigate these uncertain and chaotic times, to grow. If we remain positive, get creative and fix our eyes on God. Not absorbed by what we cannot control, or the dishonesties and distress the enemy distracts and paralyses us with.
