Happy 2020! How exciting to be entering a New Decade!
Life is filled with seasons. Times for festivities and times to grieve. Milestones help us reflect on life. The road less travelled is a lonely one, but stages an unspoiled prospect to expose your own rules, obtained with God’s wisdom, for how you will live your life when faced with adverse circumstances.
Are you a January baby?
Being born in this brand new month on the threshold of a New Year and decade is simply breath-taking. Positioning you in the ideal place to ponder over past lessons, ahead of discovering rules that are birthed from your deliberations.
Every lesson in life holds interest to our journey. And relevance. There will be meanings and significance as you advance along your path. My hope is that the value we acquire from learning, presents us with opportunities to new roads and open doors along this lifetime. We become wise through our personal experiences and the influences we obtain along these encounters with life and others. Broadening our perspective and gaining knowledge worth taking with us as we continue.
In 2018, I wrote a book Notes To Self ‘Always Believe As You Keep Moving Through Loss And Brokenness’. While this book is aimed at loss and heartbreak, there are many notes we can transfer to every area of our lives. The clue to life is maintaining positive concentration as we move through every season from brokenness until we reach wholeness.
1| Learn to let go
You will not be able to let go, until you embrace the pain – from thoughts to actions. The more you let go of inessential details, the more freedom you will gain. Because the power we give to past mistakes, shame and regret can be repeated continuously in our head. If we made the choice to discard the worry and frustration, we will immediately gather peace. This requires mastering new skills as you take responsibility for your life. To release negative emotions, stress and past relationships rather than dwelling on the past.
- Is this difficult or incapable? The choice is yours to undertake as you step forward and detach yourself from the past that will only drag you down.
2| Discover your limitations
You can change a situation, remove yourself from it or accept it. Both hold emotions that will hurl you into a rollercoaster. But life is a revolving test. You have to delve within to find out where your true strengths and weaknesses lie. At times, the lessons in life expose our weaknesses and highlight that it won’t always be easy.
Sometimes you have to leave the beaten track, to discover the path less travelled. Most of this means you will lose who you are to find your true self! Pushing yourself to seek the wilderness brings both beauty and risk. But part of searching for adventure means you discover how to manage the risks life presents you. By not allowing any limitation to impose itself in your mind and halt you from chasing your dreams.
3| Refuse to give up
Have you ever faced a moment in your life when you were so desperate to overcome a challenge or fulfil a longing in your heart?
If you stop because you believe you fail, then you will regret not trying. Time has a way of reminding us that we all will eventually grow old. If you never confront your fears or discover the unknown, you will live a life that lacks value. Simply because you believed that challenges are outside your level of experience. Run faster; don’t let anything make you fall behind. As you rise up against the odds.
4| Develop self – become aware and improve
Self-development is essential in our culture, that is constantly evolving. Nothing is totally immune to adaptability in the workplace today. Before you can develop, you need to accept yourself. Where you are right now and who you are. This is a skill that anyone can become proficient at with tolerance and time.
- How do you become self-aware? Understand yourself. Read, study and collect all the ways you want to improve.
- Are you objective in the way you view yourself? Do you record your goals, plans and priorities on a daily basis?
- More importantly, do you conclude your day by taking time to self-reflect on all those goals, plans and your priority list?
Before you fly off the handle to criticise someone else. Look at yourself first in an honest and open way and contemplate if anything you are about to say resembles any of your own shortcomings.
5| Be grateful
Have you noticed how many things you have already been ‘picky’ about today?
From the people you don’t like, to situations that have somehow made you critique. Moaning and whinging repel people.
- Why would we want to be that person who is always grumbling or complaining?
Whenever you are tempted to complain, bite your tongue. Yes bite it. And think of one think you can be grateful for instead. This all requires you changing your perspective so that you are not always taking what you have for granted. Stopping to notice the little things, because often they are big. And most of all live the words you speak, rather than express them without any appreciation.
6| Set yourself one challenge for every day
Research provides us with numerous studies. The effectiveness of intervention and how this can produce positivity to our health and wellbeing. When you boost yourself in an optimistic manner, you are increasing not only your ability to cope with crises but improve your health. Perhaps you thinking, I have heard this all before.
- Why should I apply myself to self-improvement?
You are the only one that can challenge yourself, to grow by how far you are willing to do something that will scare you. To prod you out of your comfort zone. A personal mood changer is music. If you listen to music for the mood you want to be in and not the mood you currently are, you will discover how quickly you can turn a situation from sad and downcast to cheerful and upbeat.
7| Wisely realise you only have one life
When was the last time you fell in love with life? Like step out the door and thought. Today I will see life as________ Fill in the blank by finding optimism to counteract every negative thought that slips into your mind.
- Do you automatically say I can’t without even thinking, that you can?
Don’t allow you to be the person that derails you from the track of your life. Swiftly pull yourself back on track, by empowering yourself to recognise, cope and better understand the world. Life is like a computer game. If you want to succeed you need to keep levelling up.
8| Begin today
How will you ever know if you can launch something revolutionary or world changing if you never start? We all embrace procrastination at times. But we should not grant inactive waiting the option that deprives us of all we can fill our tomorrow with. Every situation is our journey. The way we view it – as overwhelming or daunting is the only thing stopping us from commencing that first step.
- How do you aspire to change if you don’t make the decision to personally grow?
You hold your own purpose and values in your heart. Begin your life handbook, like a personalised manual for life and start living life to the fullest. So that one day you can look back gladly, knowing that you gave yourself the best chance to begin living your life.

Choosing a word in place of a new year’s resolution has become popular as an innovative prospect to incorporate the word to every choice, decison and action you make. Have you lived up to the word you chose for last year?
