How To Create New Habits

It’s time to think about how to form new habits. We have considered all our intentions about maintaining health and wellbeing.  But first we have to want to change our behaviour for the better and create new habits for ourselves.

In keeping with the theme of health and wellbeing. This could be getting in the habit of saving money. Or drinking more water. Or reducing your intake of processed foods. Start a simple exercise plan. Maybe it might be being more organised at work.  Or being a more positive person.  Developing your Christian faith and praying more. With so many areas to choose from that you could improve.  This would all be easier if you created new habits.

Getting into the habit of doing something is often easier said than done. Bad habits can begin without any effort. But developing good habits need dedicated work.

View this as a new challenge. Here is a 3 step process to consider as you learn a new behaviour and instill it a habit.  So that it becomes automatic without having to think about, like washing your hands.

1| Decide What You Want To Do

Begin by making a decision. Of what what habit you want to create. Be specific. If you want to exercise more. Tell yourself that you will go for a walk everyday.  Start with 20-30 minutes. Write it in a diary or planner. Deciding what your new habit will be and committing to when and how you’re going to do it, is a great positive first step.

2| Remind Yourself To Get It Done

The next few days make an effort to motivate yourself. Get excited about your new habit. Find ways to positively incorporate this into your daily schedule. Enlist a friend to support you. By planning ahead it will make it easier to not slip back into old habits.

Maybe it’s raining and you don’t really want to go out and walk. Or maybe work commitments keep you busy. This highlights the importance of reminders and daily planners. Set a calendar alert. dd this to your daily to-do list.

3| Make It Part Of Your Routine Until It Becomes Second Nature

And finally. Be patient because creating good habits takes time. In the meantime, devise a routine. Before new behaviours can become part of your daily routine. Spend some time reminding yourself. Motivating yourself. Boost your willpower. Until it begins to become a habit.

When you tempted to go shopping, go for a walk instead.  Change unhealthy lunches by going to the library instead.

All the best in your decision to create a new habit. Practice, practice, practice. Until you do it without thinking.  Then you are well on the way to forming a new good habit.
